What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition characterized by a consistently high blood pressure reading. Put simply, having high blood pressure means that your blood is exerting too much force on the artery walls as it flows through your blood vessels.

If you have high blood pressure, your heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood around your body. This extra work puts strain on your heart and can lead to heart disease. Oftentimes, individuals with high blood pressure will not have any symptoms, so it’s important to have regular blood pressure checks with your doctor or nurse.

Signs and Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

Many factors can affect your blood pressure, including your weight, the amount of salt you eat, other medical conditions you may have, and medications you take. In many cases, high blood pressure will not present with symptoms until it is extremely severe. At this point, patients may experience headaches, breathing difficulties, swelling, blood in the urine, and dizziness.

How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects High Blood Pressure

The relationship between the upper cervical spine and high blood pressure has been the subject of much research in recent years. The upper cervical spine is made up of seven stacked vertebrae that support the head carriage and neck.

Because of its proximity to the brainstem, a vertebral misalignment in the upper cervical spine can have a cascading effect on the body’s adaptive and sympathetic nervous systems. One of the many key functions of these systems is the regulation of arterial pressure. If a vertebral misalignment is left untreated, it can lead to disruption or overactivity in the adaptive and sympathetic nervous system, elevating blood pressure and potentially triggering the onset of hypertension.

How Our High Blood Pressure Treatment Works

Blair Chiropractic care is a natural treatment option that focuses on correcting the root cause of high blood pressure: the misalignment in the upper cervical spine.

The first step to treating high blood pressure is to identify whether your condition is linked to a vertebral misalignment in the upper cervical spine. To do so, your Blair practitioner will utilize a range of advanced diagnostic tools, including cone-beam computed tomography scans and digital X-rays.

If a misalignment is found, Blair Chiropractic specialists will perform a series of non-invasive, low-force adjustment techniques to gently coax the affected vertebrae back into their natural alignment.  By realigning the vertebrae of the upper cervical spine, we allow the nervous system to function properly once again. This, in turn, helps to normalize blood pressure and avoid hypertension.
