What are Seizures?Â
Seizures are sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain. These electrical disturbances can cause changes in your behavior, movements, or feelings, and in some cases, convulsions and/or loss of consciousness. Seizures range from brief and nearly undetectable to long and violent, with most seizures lasting from 30 seconds to two minutes.
Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by abnormal brain activity and sudden seizures. Common triggers for epilepsy include strobing lights, lack of sleep, stress, and alcohol consumption.
Signs and Symptoms of Seizures
The most obvious symptoms of a seizure are uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs. This may be preceded or followed by muscle spasms and loss of consciousness.Â
However, contrary to popular belief, seizures are not always accompanied by convulsions, with other symptoms including uncontrollable feelings of fear or anxiety, staring, visual anomalies, and concentration issues. Â
How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Seizures
While the exact cause of seizures is still unknown, there is evidence to suggest that the upper cervical spine is a factor in their development and severity. The upper cervical spine is the topmost segment of the spine and plays a key role in supporting and protecting the brainstem and spinal cord. When the upper cervical spine is misaligned, the ensuing inflammation and pressure upon the brainstem can trigger a cascade of electrical and nerve flow issues throughout the body. Left untreated, these disruptions can cause dysfunction in the central nervous system, exacerbating the frequency and/or severity of seizures.
How Our Seizure Treatment WorksÂ
Modern medicine has come a long way in the treatment of seizures and epilepsy. However, conventional treatments still rely heavily on anti-epileptic drugs and brain surgery interventions. Blair Chiropractic care is a natural and non-invasive treatment method that prioritizes restoring the spine to its natural alignment and rebooting the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
When treating seizures, the first step a Blair Chiropractic specialist will take is to evaluate your spinal health and determine whether you are suffering from a vertebral misalignment. To do so, Blair specialists use both gentle examination techniques and a wide range of advanced diagnostic tools, including X-rays and cone-beam computed tomography scans.
If a misalignment is detected, your Blair specialist will perform a series of low-force and precise adjustments to the affected vertebrae, restoring alignment to the spinal column and alleviating the root cause of pressure and inflammation around the brainstem.
